Focus on the Tenor

God has blessed Paul with a rich tenor voice, excellent pitch and full extended upper range, he can even yodel. Paul started singing in the children's choir and taking drama at age 8. He sang with the All Eastern U.S. Chorus in high school and started writing his own music at age17.

Paul Simmons was blessed with Christian parents. Paul's father, Alton Simmons has been his most admired inspiration in his life. They have enjoyed singing and playing together for years. Paul has been in church his whole life. He came to know the Lord at the ripe ole' age of seven. Paul says that in his life, he has realized that it is not enough to let Jesus save you, but that a full surrender to His will is necessary. God has given Paul great abilities, such as writing music, and playing a good many musical instruments quite well. Paul is not only a terrific singer, but is a master on the drums, percussion and combos that he played in high school, he plays the piano, keyboard and synthesizer and the cello. That's not all, he plays the bass violin, 6 string guitar, 12 string guitar, 5 string banjo, mandolin and bass guitar. Paul had dreams of becoming a symphony orchestra conductor, that is why he wanted to learn to play all of the instruments in an orchestra.

God has been good to Paul. He has always been there for him. In February of 1991, Paul was afflicted with Guillian Barre' Syndrome (GBS). When he lost the ability to walk, talk, feed himself or even sit up, he found that God was still there for him. In the darkest moments of his life God has been there to give him love and hope. Paul says he only needs to say His name and a peace would come over him that could never be explained. Paul consistently demonstrates his love for the Lord through his musical talents. Out of times of great adversity in Paul's life has come some of his best work for the Lord. Since that time, Paul has regained all of his faculties and has become an active and rejuvenated man. The Lord has seen fit to allow Paul to regain most of his physical stamina and continues His healing process in his life.

Singing tenor with the Oak Grove Quartet is, at times, a very demanding part of the Oak Grove Quartet ministry. The Lord is working daily in such a way that it testifies to His loving grace with these men of God. Paul sings each year in the Living Christmas Tree at Oak Grove and is an active member of the choir.

You will know which one is Paul when you watch the Quartet, he is the one all the way on your right, or you could just say, "the one that looks like Ulysses S. Grant." Next time you see Paul make sure you get him to yodel for you.
